ABOUT THE COMMEMORATION COMMITTEE

MLK2019.jpg

The Seattle/King County Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee is composed of dozens of grassroots, labor, business, minority, and progressive community organizations and volunteers from throughout the Puget Sound region. Annually, under the leadership of the Seattle King County MLK Organizing Coalition, on the Dr. King Holiday, these groups come together to present our community's largest tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2021 marked our 39th year honoring Dr. King's legacy...and we're still going.

Every year the committee identifies and highlights a facet of Dr. King's work and relates it to local issues facing citizens in King County which is the only county in the United States named after an African Descendant of the United States Enslaved, (Black American). Each year, thousands of local citizens participate in one of the nation's largest and most racially diverse rallies and marches held in the country.

The theme usually speaks to the need for justice in all facets of our society: locally, nationally, and globally.  Through workshops, an opportunity fair, rally, and a march, we keep the spotlight on our responsibility to correct the injustices in our world. Each year’s event theme focuses on issues such as, the criminal justice system, the educational academic achievement gap, the military industrial complex, threats to human rights and proper funding of our community projects. Our mission is to have a program that is informative and empower those who attend to be an agent for change.

Our Philosophy

The Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee believes his-story or her-story is our-story. We will preserve, educate and empower people by teaching the legacy of Rev. Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, through our commitment to promote and protect the human rights of every race, creed, religion, nationality, gender, activity limitation, participation restriction or sexual orientation.

Our History

Like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. it started with a DREAM. In February of 2018, a meeting was held with a broad cross section of faith and community based organizations, businesses, labor, and individuals to establish an organization to preserve, educate and empower people by hosting various events
throughout the year that would feature the history of Rev. Dr. King, the Civil Rights
Movement and local leaders that have made significant contributions for equality. At that meeting, the Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee (MLKCC) was
created. Read More
